Site Investigation
Cable Percussion Drilling Services UK
What Is Cable Percussion Drilling?
Cable percussion drilling is one of the most widely used techniques for ground and site investigation. Boreholes can be drilled down to 60 metres, with diameters ranging from 150 mm to 300 mm. As the borehole deepens, different cutting tools recover soil samples while temporary steel casing is installed at the same time. This casing supports the borehole walls and stops loose ground from collapsing in.
Throughout drilling, we can carry out in‑situ testing, including:
- Standard Penetration Testing (SPT)
- Borehole vane testing
- Permeability testing
We collect both disturbed and undisturbed samples from the borehole. These are logged in detail by our experienced geo‑environmental engineers, then sent to accredited laboratories for further analysis. Once drilling is finished, monitoring equipment can be installed directly inside the borehole. This enables ongoing measurements — such as groundwater levels and ground gas monitoring — to be taken by our specialist technicians whenever required.
Key Benefits of Cable Percussion Drilling
Great Depth & Broad Versatility
Capable of reaching significant depths, cable percussion drilling works across all ground types — cohesive, non‑cohesive, and mixed strata. It is ideal for geotechnical surveys, environmental assessments, and general site investigations.
Reliable, Accurate Sampling
Samples are recovered at regular intervals, giving a clear and detailed picture of changing ground conditions. This precise data allows engineers to make well‑informed decisions about foundation design, construction methods, and ground improvement solutions.
Cost‑Effective & Efficient
The method's straightforward design means drilling proceeds quickly compared to many alternatives. You gain high‑quality geological information without unnecessary expense — delivering excellent value and reliable data.
Low Impact on the Surroundings
The rigs are compact and occupy a small working footprint. They operate with low noise levels and minimise disruption, helping to protect the surrounding environment and ecosystem.
Comprehensive Sample Range
We can collect every sample type you need — disturbed and undisturbed soil, rock cores, and groundwater. These support full laboratory testing covering soil strength, compaction properties, permeability rates, and contamination screening.
